GeorgeTown Festival 2011

This is no doubt the coolest thing I have done. I get to involve myself as a volunteer in this month-long celebration. 'Why or how you involve in this/found this?' I get this many times. Umm well, I did visit the street celebration last year and found that it's really interesting. And am always hope to involve in something alike, something related to tourism, which is the spec I plan to take in the 2nd year of my business course, what's more, I just love heritage stuff, the buildings, the arts&cultures, the stories behind.

7th July 2011.
It's the first day of Tapestry of Culture. We reached E&O Hotel at 0930. This is the very first time for some of us to step in, all are amazed ! Get to the hall and witnessed the opening ceremony for the event by CM Lim. Before we get to stand by at different stations for Gold Trail, we've been given a GTF t-shirt and a volunteer tag. The shirt is seriously nice! Together with Angelia, our station is Habib Jewellery, the small shop along Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling.

It's only 1030 and yet we've to wait till 1300 for the VIPs to arrive. So we've decided to visit the Masjid Kapitan Keling which is just opposite to the Habib. The mosque will not be open for public normally but since it is a festive, so we these normal people and actually go inside and have a look. There was an Indian guy to explain all the details and story of Islam to us, he's known to be a law lecturer for a college. Went to a small museum beside after that. Photography exhibition in action and there were a lot of things from ages ago, the antiques. Interesting !

We're just walking around and stepped in any building that's open for visitors.
It's rained just before the arrival of VIPs. Umbrellas, crowds, flashes, trishaws..
After all the hectic stuff, lunch time at Amelie's Cafe with all the people, our leadership camp volunteers plus the organisers - vin harng and peiling.

It's then the Food and Craft session while some of us were just distribute flyers to the visitors and tourists. You know what, it's actually a good chance to talk with the ang mo. ngek ngek ngek. We're standing and walking under the sunny sun after vin harng get chillies everywhere on any poles available. Our skin was actually sticky after all the sweats since hours ago, the fact is, we sweat, we dried up, then sweat again, dried up again. And the process went on and on...

Since we got a mission to get a programme list from other event at other street, Angelia and me walked all the way long to the place, and we almost lost in the midst. 'Meng Eng Soo' the place,  was so amazing. All the people wearing clothes from dynasty ago. You got to change your RM to their old currency before you can buy something there. We met Ivan and Yongkang there, and four of us were just sit down, relax, minum kopi. The tables and the benches were so old school and it was really fun.

Left Meng Eng Soo around 1800 and get back to the information booth. We were just too tired to distribute flyers anymore and were sitting down, chit chatting.
Crowds were everywhere. It's really a huge celebration and people were coming from all the places to witness the fest. Lion dance, Nanaco - the sweet violinist, snakes, foods, performance everywhere..

It's almost night, means that we have to stand by at Khoo Kongsi for cultural performance. Here, we met some other volunteers and made new friends. The preview of 12Monkeys was really catching my attention especially the one from Thai. Hmm.. I know what you guys wanna say bout this LOL But then, the Punjabi drum performance was fascinating as well. In fact, every performers of the night did a great great job !

Umm, I didn't manage to take a photo with the Thai that night, I was just waving my hands, saying goodbye to them.

Cleaning up the mess before have a talk with all the hard workers of the day. You guys are amazing people, have a great time working with you all ! Too bad we don't have a group photo. Oh ya, and we left for home around 0000. It has been a long long day, yet, we do gain much precious experience, friends and the most important, memories :)

the only group photo of the day which left out haisien, yongkang and vin harng
